Here is another free download for a live looper.

Flyloops is an incredibly easy to use live software looper for PCs, it is designed specifically to generate live electronica music as opposed to ambient style or singer songwriter style music. The primary difference is an emphasis on loop interaction and independence and a de-emphasis on loop depth functions (such as randomize and

reverse).

Here is a quick breakdown of the functions, please note that all functions can be done immediately and on the fly

without stopping playback.

Basic Functions:
- Record independent loop of differing lengths, synced or not
- Stack (layer/overdub) infinitely on any of the loop tracks, with or without decay
- Stop any loop playback immediately or at the next master loop repeat
- Stutter (One-Shot)
- Record a B side compliment which plays serially to any of the 5 primary loops
- Transition any loop seamlessly from it's A to B side

Advanced Functions:
- Consolidate multiple loops into a single loop
- Multiply, Add (append), or Overwrite any loop
- Change which loop is the master
- Stop or Stutter all loops together, or some group of loops
- Crossfade between two groups of loops
- Scratch a group of loops as if on a turntable

Recording:
- Load or Save loops as wav files
- Record a live session including all playing loops and incoming audio (solos, etc.)

MIDI:
- Map any midi command to any function with a simple midi learn function

Coming Soon:
- VST compliance

see

www.flyloops.com

for screenshot, video demos, and free download.

Thanks,
Aaron

Hey all,

I am a musician / inventor down in Miami, I have been looping for quite some time, and only just now joined here (transplanted from loopers delight, thanks to Rick).

I have a home-grown looper that I use which allows me to control loops independently of one another ... which I figure is pretty useful (but I am looking for feedback, of course). I also layer slightly differently .. instead of using a midi clock, I just have a notification that goes out every time the first loop you record goes back to it's 0 position .... so subsequent loops can start/stop recording on any master loop repeat (no need for multiply functions this way ... I think it is more intuitive... ).

I am trying to get as much feedback as possible since I need to make this as useful and user friendly as possible for both musicians and DJs (and the hybrids). This is a sponsored product and will be completed this spring.

Please check it out at www.flyloops.com.

There are several video demos there (a couple of which you can find on youtibe, if you prefer).

I think watching the videos should give you a good idea of how it works ..... after that, just lemme know.

PS - anyone else here from Miami?

Thanks,

Hi fellow NERDS! (or geeks, dorks, what ever)

Years ago I started dating a girl who did a ton of
chatting over ol'school IRC (Internet Relay Chat). At
first I thought they were purely for silly
pick-up/flirt times, but she assured me that it
wasn't, but was instead a way for instantanious
communication between a community of friends.

I reluctantly joined and ended up meeting a ton of
people that I now call my friends, in a similar way to
the people here I've met who I call friends. We often
hang out in the real world as well. Often meetings
are initated via chat in a very spontanious way.
(Hey, anyone on line want to meet for sushi?)

So anyway, what I've done is created a channel for us.
It's simple to join. First you need an IRC client.
There are free ones for the Mac or XP world. I go to
versiontracker.com and do a search on "irc" and a
bunch come up. I'm using colloquy for Mac OSX but
there's also visualIRC for XP (it's not as friendlly
though so I'm sure you can do better, I just don't use
my PC for s such things.

Anyway, think of it as a way to augment the LD list.
A kind of continual virtual coctail party, where if
your board and/or lonely you can log on and say, "HEY,
has anyone ever had quantize problems with an
Echoplex?" or something like that. Of course the
topic can be (I hope) as varied and often off topic as
LD can be, but hopefully it can hover around loop
based music.

So, in the client of your choice put in
electricrain.com as your irc channel. Then type /join
#/loopchat and you'll be in. It's an experiement that
I'm not sure will work, but why not?

Cheerio,

I'm off to the NAMM show in L.A. (the National Association of Music Manufacturers annual show is one of the 'mecca' events of the music industry with as many as 80,000 people attending in four days) next week.

I'm very excited as I will be having 8 solo performances
demonstrating the new state of the art Live Looping device,
the LOOPERLATIVE.

Designed by Bob Amstadt, the Looperlative will get it's world premiere
from my good friend, UK bassist Steve Lawson and myself in several different shows.

If anyone is heading down there, we will be at booth 1857 in Hall E and I will
be doing solo shows at 1,3 and 5 on Friday and Saturday and 1 and 3 on Sunday).

Bob told us, flatteringly, that he designed the machine after seeing Steve and I perform together at the San Jose Museum of Art on the first Loop Tour with
Michael Manring and Andre LaFosse a few years ago.

He has been amazing and has incorporated every single idea that Steve and I have given him into the machine, which sports 8 separate 48 khz stereo loops that can be played synchronously or asynchronously. I"ve never met someone in a music company who seems so eager to serve the community
that this product will appeal to.

Additionally, there is an ethernet port built into the device so that people can download upgrades to the unit from the web (and also up and download loops to a computer network).

I feel humbled and excited to be on the cusp of a new technology that will
keep changing the way music is made in live situations.

You can check this exciting piece of gear out at
Bernhard, I have to say, is having a banner month. He is a headliner for this years' Y2K5 Festival; he just produced the best live looping festival I've ever seen and he has a beautiful new debut live looping solo CD out. I will write a full review of this wonderful record as soon as I am able to breathe after Y2K5, but it's a goody. Suffice it to say that you should buy one from him while he is in America (and the shipping charges are low.............lol)

This festival is run on virtually no budget. The fact that it has become so big and wonderful is a testiment to the live looping community all over the world. None of this would have been possible without the existence of Loopers Delight, founded and maintained by Kim Flint. He just told us that this incredibly informative and exciting website has over 900,000 page views per month now. Thanks Kim for all of your energy, time and financial contribution to this community.

See you all there, I hope!!!!

yours, Rick Walker (festival organizer)

ps Sadly, Concert headliner, Italy's Roberto Zorzi's has had to cancel his tour to the US because of the illness of his partner Paola. Our heart is with them both and we pray for her speedy recovery.

I've been doing an electronic music live show using Live on a G4 500 laptop, an Axis 9 CD player, Roland SH-32 synth all controlled by a Novation Remote 25. So far, it more or less does what I want... but I'm a bit dissipointed that I can't get this rig smaller. Is there anyway to run a software synth along side Live on such a laptop? I tried Cube once, and it choaked plus I couldn't see a way of routing it into Live where I could loop it with a VST delay (PSP42) that I like. Synthesis isn't really needed if a good ROMpler could be had to save CPU cycles. Any ideas?

Right now it's only being used to surf while TV is going and some IRC. I'm using an M-Audio USB Audiofile which seems pretty good, but I've only used it for some sampling at this point.

However, it seemes oddly limited for looping due to it's 5/10 sec delay time. I like to run it higher quality so I only get 5 sec out of it. You'd think it could give you as much delay as you have RAM to support, no? If you have this software, or want to get it, I say write someone at http://www.pspaudioware.com and see if they'll consider this feature in future versions.

Later I found people like Brian Eno and Laurie Anderson and started drifting from my Brit Pop/Pink Floyd roots into... well into something else.

Now I use hardware sequencers/laptops synced to an Electrix Repeater so I can create on the fly loops that constantly change (or not). I feed that Repeater guitar, bass and several synths, though guitar is my main instrument. What comes out ranges from hip-hop (cliq-hop?) influenced prog-rock to ambient and everything in between.

ANYWAY... It's been a while since I've played with other musicians and I'm getting itchy to do so again. My last band kind of dissolved when our Chapman Stick player got a boyfriend... well you know how that goes. I'm into many forms of music, but the stuff I create kind of ends up being influenced by Bill Laswell and co., Radiohead, Massive Attack, Boards of Canada, King Crimson, DJ Cheb, Talvin Singh, etc. Some samples of my music can be found at:

So, I'm not all that worried about what you play or if you even play a traditional instrument, but more about commitment to your art and imagination. If you're going to disappear for half the year to make a giant slug for Burningman, pass this by. I'm hoping for a consistent (at least weekly) all year group that can compose, improvise, perform and record.

One thing I'm missing is the ability to actually live improvise a melody over what I'm doing. Better yet, I'd love to use PSP's Lexicon delay emulator to be able to create long loops that sync to the tempo. Here's my question: Can you use a looping delay with a soft synth? Any one try it? Would it all run on a 500 mhz G4 Powerbook?

So, last Saturday I had my first time out using Live 2 (run on a Macintosh TiBook 500 using OSX) and a Numark Axis 9 CD player. SO much fun! Almost as much fun as bringing out my whole guitar/drummachine/Repeater rig, but 1/10th the setup and breakdown time. Basically I took some drum loops I got on sample CDs, some I made up on my E-MU Command Station, some I did on my guitar, bass and keyboards with an Electrix Repeater and basically threw them together in Live, while mixing in some weird spoken word stuff on the Axis 9. I also used the CD player to play little weird songs while I was changing Live files.

Anyway, it all went great, except for a point where the Axis 9 crashed! This wasn't too bad, as I could easily reboot it, but when I did, it crashed the M-Audio Audiophile USB interface! Live kept pumping along, but no sound. I rebooted the computer and finally got it up and running again, but in hind site I probably could have just power cycled the USB interface... not sure. Anyway, I'll have to experiment with this more, because if it's going to be an issue I'm going to have to figure out a workaround.

I don't even have an acoustic any longer. Actually, the more I get into synthesis the less I heavily process my guitar at all. For a while I was using a Digitech 2120 and an AdrenaLinn processor, sometimes a Digitech SpaceStation as well. Now, more often than not I'm using more traditional guitar effects (though often extreme) and possibly an eBow or Sustainiac.

A long time I wrested with the MIDI guitar thing, but when I got a Novation Remote25, I slowly started to use the MIDI guitar interface less and less. Finally I sold it to fund a laptop. I'm hoping to run Reaktor 4 on it to do some live looping as one would use an EDP or DL4. According to my good friend Jon El-Bizri, Reaktor 4 is great and he's created an EDP emulation patch that he swears does a great job of syncing loops to midi in a live situation. So much so he sold his EDP. He's a stickler for quality, so I imagine it's pretty good. That's on my list right after I get Ableton's Live going. My idea is to do smaller shows using Live to play back loops created with a Repeater and recorded in Digital Performer 4 in conjunction with an E-MU XL-7 Command Station through in a KAOSS Pad and AirFX and that will be my "DJ" rig when bringing a guitar setup is not appropriate. I'm finding that more and more gigs are so geared towards DJs that bringing instruments has too many physical problems (space, time to set up and break down) as well as being an affront to the DJs playing sets the same night. Kind of like holding up a sign that says, "See, I can make the music that the other guy can only play on a CD."

Anyway, I have a few things posted at http://www.zerocrossing.net/mp3s/ if you'd like to listen. Nothing new, but hopefully soon...

If you're reading this you've joined up. My point is to explore the possibilites of this great technology and not get bogged down with small minds. Basically, when I was asked to come up with a perfect "looper of the future" and ideas such as "Stereo" and were shot down, I knew I needed a better forum.

OK. Recently on LD a question was asked: What would you want in a prefect looper of the future. The resulting threads were very telling, not about the artists that use loopers, but of the people who develop them. Here's how I see it.

The EDP, while incredibly powerful and cool, is in itself a dead end. Neither Gibson nor Aurisis seem to have any intention to develop the hardware further. So be it. It is what it is, but it's not right for everyone. From what I see in the retail music world, there's more money in DJ gear than there is in gear made specifically for instrumentilests. No one has yet tapped the potential in that market for a real time hardware looper. While the Repeater was a step in the right direction, evil forces (and there are always evil forces) brought it down.

So, where do we all go from here? Can we continue using the technology forever? I fear that one day EDPs will be again out of prodution and used ones will be beyond the means of most musicians. Same holds true for the Repeater. I rely on the Repeater's MIDI sync to make the music that I make, and the idea of not having access to this type of device is frightening. Software based looping may be our savior, but I think that means having a voice and convincing a developer to take a stab at a fully functional mature audio looping device. Either that or have NI invest in updating Reaktor to be able to give us the type of control we need and features we want.

Any ideas? Should we begin an email campain? I'm willing to put out an effort but not to people who have already decided what the market and tools should be like.

I've always loved the way DJs could scratch and minipulate a record, but I wanted to be able to scratch anything I wanted, not just something that I could find on vinyl. Well, prices have finally come down on DJ CD players with similar attributes to vinyl and I bought a Numark Axis 9. I love it! Here's my issue. Now that I have the ability I seem to be at a loss for material to sample. I kind of want to stay away from doing clips from movies or TV, although I like a lot of music that uses such things in an artful way. Today I tried recording some spoken word phrases and everything I thought might sound profound sounded a bit pretentious or corny. If I put a lot of inflection into it, I sounded silly. If I held back, it sounded flat. Anyway, I did come up with a few things that are kind of useful but I just thought I'd put this out there and see what people thought. BTW, this CD player is awsome! Tons of looping ability built right in and a great BPM detector with MIDI in and out. I paid $399 for it.
